Will the Apple Base Station work with my cable Internet?
I see that you have listed in used inventory a couple of Apple routers ... are those models compatible with Comcast cable and do they have hardwire ports for connecting our two macs and the shared printer?
Answer
To my knowledge, ALL routers are compatible with Comcast cable Internet or any other high-speed Internet service -- as long as the router has 'Internet-in' and an 'out' ports. The 'Internet-in' port is often labeled as the 'WAN' (wide-area network) port.
A router basically just takes 'input' from the Internet and then creates an internal network. Part of the router's job is to manage (or share) the access to the Internet for the computers connected to the router. The router does this job by keeping track of which computers requested what and from where. Without a router, you could only connect one computer to the Internet if the Internet provider only provides you with one IP address (as does Comcast and most high-speed DSL and cable providers).
All, if not most, routers are compatible because all of the devices in the, chain including the cable modem, speak the same language as they all adhere to the same global networking standards.
Keep in mind that Apple's Airport Base Stations up to but NOT including the most recent model, have only one ethernet network port. So if you wish to plug in multiple computers and/or printers via ethernet, either you need the most recent Airport Extreme Base Station (with three ethernet ports) or you'll need to supplement your router with a network hub/switch.
If your printer is USB, you can plug it into the Airport Base Station's USB port, share it to multiple computers, and still have an open ethernet port for one or more other ethernet devices namely computers.
